“ Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary is a 13,000-acre Audubon preserve tucked just inland from Naples, home to one of the last remaining stands of old-growth bald cypress forest in North America. The way to see it is along a 2.25-mile boardwalk, a raised path that winds through pine flatwoods, wet prairie, and deep swamp.

Walking the loop is a slow, steady immersion into primeval Florida. Ancient cypress trees rise from the water, while orchids, bromeliads, and ferns cling to the branches overhead. Along the way you’ll pass wading birds, turtles, alligators, and—if you’re lucky—a barred owl or the elusive ghost orchid. ”
